So basically all the bodywork they’ve done, and that was set - that was anchored - and then I came in to do the P-cap, which is the performance capture, which is the face and the voice acting and the actual movement of the face. So it was weird at first and it was difficult in the way that they’d already done most of the mo-cap for it. And I like his work, I like his kind of stuff. Death Stranding – HeartmanĬGMagazine: How was it seeing Nicolas Winding Refn with your voice for the character of Heartman in Death Stranding?ĭarren Jacobs: Now, to be honest, that was a little bit weird at first because I actually know Nicholas. It’s so tragic, and what a great character to do! I loved it. This guy who dies every 21 minutes and then comes back to life on the 24th minute because he’s searching for his family. Every time I went in there it blew my mind, the things that he would tell me the concept for Heartman itself was so unique. For me, I love working with directors and on projects that affect people, which is next level cerebral. To know that this guy has this brain that is on the next level, and even when he tells you what the plot is, or what your character is, you go out, you nod your head, “yes, yes, yes”, but you have no idea. Working with Hideo Kojima was phenomenal. And then about two days after that, I got the job. So I was doing all this stuff and improvising and I sent it off. And they actually told me that had narcolepsy. So I really went into fine detail with my second audition. And then I got an inkling that it was Hideo Kojima’s new game. It was a really difficult audition, but then I sent it off and a week later they got back in touch with me with a different character name, and some notes from the unknown director, because it was all coded.īut by this point, I’d really been looking into it because I was really intrigued by this project. Then I was in such a rush, I was running around trying to memorize the words and it was so much technobabble. I did such a good voiceover audition, I was so pleased with it. Which means I had to go on camera and learn the lines. It’s actually funny, I thought it was just a regular voiceover audition, and I did my audition and then was just about to send it off, when I realized that it was a self-tape that they wanted. Basically, in LA, most voiceover work you have to audition for. This announcement is something we can hopefully look forward to at E3 this Summer, as we wait with baited breath for an official date of release.Darren Jacobs: Well, I auditioned for it. “ I plan to announce something in 2018 that’ll surprise everyone even more.” In fact, in an end-of-2017 interview Kojima dropped a cryptic hint about the potential release date: This seems to be just what Kojima and Sony want for now, and Kojima’s well known for sewing little hints and clues about his games into interviews, tweets and game details. Even with the trailers and game footage painting an overall picture of grime and anguish, we’re still in the dark on what the game is actually about. When the actors’ casting is made official we can hopefully get a look at the characters they’ll be playing.Īlthough the cast is being fleshed out with more great actors, there’s still very little known about the game. O’Brien has provided voices for Telltale‘s Batman: The Enemy Within, The Order: 1886 and Days Gone, the upcoming zombie shooter by Sony.īaker is attached to almost every Marvel or DC superhero game and has also had lead roles in The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite and Batman: Arkham Origins. O’Brien and Baker are voice acting veterans and both have done voice work in a ton of video games already. The picture, captioned “Honored to be working alongside these two fine lads on new project Death Stranding” was quickly removed, likely due to how secretive Kojima and his team are being about the game. O’Brien announced she would be joining the game on her Instagram, sharing a picture of herself with Baker and Reedus. Now it looks like voice actors Troy Baker and Emily O’Brien will also be joining the cast. Though not much is known about the game, trailers have shown that Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) will have lead roles in the game. Death Stranding will be Hideo Kojima‘s first game since parting with long-time partners Konami and the Metal Gear series.
